The time has finally come. For those of you who have been following along with my journey, it’s here. This month, my twin boys will leave the nest and learn to soar on their own. I have such mixed feelings. They are both so excited for what university holds for them. And, that enthusiasm is contagious! I loved my college experience, and I hope and pray that their experience lives up to everything they want it to be.
But, then there’s the flipside. Well, at least there’s (selfishly) a flipside for me. It’s going to be hard. Heck, it’s already hard. As parents, we’re given these little bundles of joy to grow and nurture for 18+ years, day in and day out. Some of those days are glorious, and some are downright hell.
As E.E. Cummings wrote, “Yours is the light by which my spirit’s born: – you are my sun, my moon, and all my stars.”
I couldn’t have said it better myself.
It is pretty natural that the sun, the moon, and the stars revolve around our children. Or dogs, or cats, or careers. There are all kinds of “children.” They give us purpose. Yet, with my kids, when we’ve had the challenging days, I’ve always had hope for the next day. That’s all about to change. Of course, we will still be close and there will be the next days; it’s just going to be different. Everything is changing. I’m aware that once they head off to school, life will never be the same.
Will and Henry will always be my greatest joy. Now, I’m coming to the realization that my daily sources of joy are going to need to shift a bit. So, I’ve made a list of 31 things that make me happy. I figure that’s a month’s worth of good things. It’s not about extravagant purchases or possessions. It’s just about the (mostly little) things that make me smile – and learning to appreciate and find the bliss in them. In no particular order, here goes…
- Room service
- Making a difference
- A sincere compliment
- A day at the beach
- A smile
- Being home and snuggled up during a rainstorm
- The night sky
- The first cup of coffee
- Hugs – the ones that really envelop you
- A handwritten note on personal stationery
- A view from up high
- The perfect lipstick shade
- Chic sunglasses
- A crisp white shirt
- My family
- Diamonds (and rubies and jade…)
- Champagne and caviar
- Anything Gucci
- Vintage typewriters
- My inner circle of friends
- A good PR pitch (which usually results in a great edit)
- Leather leggings
- My job – and the clients and colleagues I get to work with every day
- A good laugh. A really good, hearty, make-you-clutch-your-stomach, crying-until-you-can’t-breath-for-air laugh.
Let me know what makes you happy. I’d love to hear from you.
Here’s to a joyful August!
